Knit with epiphyllum

In autumns tones, individual daubs of gold, orange, dusky green, yellow, ochre and red form the knit fabric which falls in folds and covers the entire background of the painting. Strong light from the top left back corner shines through the petals of a single creamy white epiphyllum flower. It’s outer layer of autumn-toned petals surrounding it like a sunburst. Part of the If fabrics could speak... project and exhibition, every painting holds a story. Story Like many others before me, I was seduced by the beauty of unusual balls of yarn, linked like a chain with silk thread, shimmery and rich. Unfortunately, when I started to crochet it, the beauty of the yarn was lost, no matter which stitch I tried. It needed to be knitted. I gave up and Mum came to the rescue, creating something useful and beautiful out of a poorly considered decision. Perhaps the painting should have been called ‘The cardigan’.
